Baby Sewing

A little summer outfit for Olive. I went into some big chain stores last week to buy some clothes for her and left empty handed. One had nothing I liked and one was so disorganised if it did have anything nice I couldn't find it. Lucky I just happen to have quite a bit of fabric and lots of patterns!
I love this pattern - Butterick  5439. My Grandmother made the exact same style tops for us when we were babies
The shorts are based on the Oliver&S Puppet Show Ones. I didn't add the pockets, I don't think a 5 week old has much use for them and did not cut a separate waist band piece. I just added the height to the main part. I made the bias piece on the bottom a little shorter as I with the other sizes I have made, they are the same length as the main part and I do like to have a bit of gathering at the sides. I could have made the bias pieces even shorter.
I made the smallest size and would just made the next size up when I make them again, but I would make them shorter in length, these go down way past her knees. Poor little Olive is not tall.
A little hat which is still way to big for her, but I know it will fit her eventually.
The roses in my garden are lovely at the moment, it is a shame that the weeds are nearly as big as them.

  1. So impressed you are finding time and energy to sew!!
I similarly went looking for some stuff for A this week and very nearly left empty handed, were it not for a cute expensive dress on sale and a gift card. (Appalled at myself for spending money on a simple dress I could make so easily (Have measured up a pattern from it), but it was a gift, right?!)
Hoping I can make some time to sew for her soon...

  2. Gorgeous! The fabric looks lovely. My mum made my little girl a dress like that, I wonder if it is the same pattern? Love the fabric too.

I love the Oliver + S Puppet Show pattern - I think mainly for the shorts. Did you know there was an error in the original pattern though and the bias strips were longer than they were meant to be? So it is meant to have little gathers at the side.

  4. I love the style and the fabric. I will have to find a similar pattern for the top in toddler size because little girl will be two next summer. It is fall here so I am concentrating on knitting hats for my little ones though I just ordered a bunch of patterns for spring/summer clothes.

  7. Ohhh I love this little outfit, how cute! I love the criss-cross detail on the back of the top. Also, I'm a little bit jealous: we're heading into winter here in London, and I'm getting out all the blankets, winter coats and quilts! x

  8. I'm thinking that top pattern would be perfect for my toddler for summer. I've seen similar online, but no link to an actual pattern. I love the fabrics you've chosen.
