Burda 7808

What do you do when you have so many half finished projects and things that should have been done yesterday? Sew a new dress of course. It was 36 degrees today and I am in desperate need of some summer dresses.
Burda 7808 had lots of promise looking at the pattern, it also had the 'this is just going to be a big baggy tent look'. I couldn't find many reviews so I cut it out and started sewing with some black cotton poplin from the stash. The first things to go was the back insert as I cut, I just cut a normal back and then cut a facing for it (though if I made it again I might cut the back how it is in the pattern without using a tie - I really don't like ties at the back of my clothes).
I did cut the collar out from view B but it made me look like a witch so that went completely. I also cut short sleeves, but it was so hot here today I threw them out. I had to cut of a few inches in length.
It makes me look less of a humungous witch than it did at the start, but it is not really flattering from the side, but I actually quite like it. It is a great dress for wearing around town and around the house, very comfortable to sew in (which is very important) and very cool when it is hot. I'm definitely thinking I might make another one, probably in double gauze.

The girls took some pictures of me. Here is one with me actually in the picture.

it looks great Kate. i hate ties at the back of my clothes too, it just gives the kids something to hang on to and drives me crazy.

  3. It looks great! I think your's looks better without the collar, i've never been a fan of mandarin style collars.

  4. Oh it's so nice, you could do so many accessories too, belts, cardigans, all sorts of necklaces + ankle length tights!! You'll wear that all year round honey, love it!! Love Posie

  5. Looks great on and I think the front gathers will have a softer look when made in the double gauze, though with a few washes the fabric you've got will lose that 'brand new' look too.

  7. It does look excellent for sewing in! We have yet to have any real hot weather here in Adelaide. Most unusual, but I'm not complaining! Funny how we are not motivated to sew for the hot weather until it is hot!

  8. It looks like a very comfy dress. Perfect for many occassions (bonus). The no sleeves wouldmake it as cool as can be. I love your sewing pattern reviews.

It looks exactly like the kind of dress that I would grab first from the wardrobe every time. Thanks for the review - it is now on my must sew list.

  10. I really, really like it! Looks terrific on you, and it's the sort of style I love to wear on hot days too. I might need to purchase this pattern! I think it would be nice in one of those Anna Maria Horner voiles as well. I can imagine this one being made over and over again!
